FAQs for IPL DevicesUpdated 2 years ago

How does IPL work?

IPL emits a wavelength into the skin which targets pigment. The light energy  is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then turns to heat and destroys the hair cells.

What is the difference between the two handsets?

The (model 1) only has 5 strength levels and is less powerful than model 2. Model 2 has 8 strength levels and higher pulses at 900,000 v 500,000.

Does the handset have a warranty?

Yes all our products are under a 12 month warranty.

Does it hurt?

IPL is considered far less painful than alternative methods of hair removal. You will feel some warmth from the device on your skin when using it, which is normal. If your skin is extra sensitive, you can always use a lower level on your device. Start on the lower levels and work your way up if necessary.

Will this work on sensitive skin?

The devices are suitable for all skin types.

How long will it take before I start seeing results?

After 3-4 treatments, most customers begin to see some results. After 8 treatments, you should see a greater improvement. Keep in mind results do vary between customers.

How often do I need to use it?

For the first 8 weeks use your device twice each week. Then 8 weeks after use it one to two times per month depending on hair thickness and condition.

Are there any side effects to IPL?

When using device correctly, side effects are rare. You may experience some mild redness after use. This will subside shortly after treatment.

I have PCOS. Will this work for me?

Yes, IPL can be used for hormonal hair growth.

I have epilepsy. Is IPL suitable for me?

Do not use IPL if you have epilepsy. Please consult a medical professional for any medical issues or anything you’re unsure about.

Is it normal for there to be a slight burning smell when using the handset?

Yes! The burning smell is just the slight burning of hairs which haven’t been shaved. Please ensure that you have prepped your skin correctly by shaving before your session.

How do I clean my handset?

It’s advised for you to clean the handset after each use. You can do this with alcohol solution or anti-bacterial spray/wipe to clean the handset and the light window after each treatment. Please ensure your handset is switched OFF, and not plugged in.

What is the recommended age to use the handset?

We recommended people 16 and older for our devices.

Do I need to wear eye protection?

No you don’t. We don’t recommend looking directly at the flashes though.

How many years will this product last?

The products have between 500,000 and 900,000 pulses, so will last more than 20 years!

How strong is this product and what is the energy output?

The Femvy IPL hair removal handset uses 600.000 flashes and 5 energy levels.

The Pro IPL hair removal uses 900.000 flashes and 8 energy levels.

Which areas of my body can I use this on?

You can use the device anywhere on the body. This includes the Brazilian area and your face. Please avoid putting the device too close to your eyes.

Do I need to shave before using this product?

Yes, you should shave the desired areas before use. The hair follicle does need to be intact for IPL to be effective. This means no waxing, plucking, threading, epilating etc.

Which hair removal methods can I use between treatments?

You may shave in between treatments, however, do NOT wax, epilate or pluck as this damages the root which is what light absorbs in your IPL treatments.

Does IPL work for all skin tones?

It will work for all skin tones except for very dark.

Does IPL work on all hair colours?

Light blonde, red and grey hair will not be effective for IPL to treat as IPL relies on the melanin in the hair to absorb the light energy.

Can I use IPL while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Sometimes our hormones change when we’re pregnant/breastfeeding and affect the hair growth. Our skin might be more sensitive while pregnant as well.  We advise against using IPL whilst pregnant. Please contact a medical professional before purchase.

Can I use IPL over freckles or moles?

It’s better to not go over the freckles or moles. If you have light freckles, then the colour of the freckles will be temporarily darker for a few days and it will go back to normal. But we don’t advise you to go over any moles.

Can I use IPL over tattoos?

No, you should not go over areas with tattoos.

Can I use this product before or after tanning?

If you have recently been sun tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your handset. You should wait 48 hours to tan after using your handset. The same applies for sun beds. We advise removing all artificial tan before using our handsets, as the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair. You can reapply the tan after your session once the skin has relaxed.

How is the handset powered?

The device comes with a long cord which will need to be plugged in the whole time. These devices cannot be used cordlessly.

Do I need to wear protective glasses?

You may/may not wear sunglasses to protect yourself from the light. If you have decided to not wear sunglasses, please do not look at the flash light directly or point the gun to your eyes.

Does this remove hair permanently?

You will need to do maintenance sessions to ensure permanent hair removal every 2-3 months.

Is this suitable for men?

Yes! Our devices are unisex.
